Der Klimawandel zeigt, dass es in Zukunft immer wichtiger wird, sauberes Trinkwasser verfügbar zu machen. Durch die kontinuierliche Entwicklung von synthetischen Substanzen sind wir von Chemikalien umgeben, die über verschiedene Wege in das Oberflächen- und Grundwasser und schließlich in unser Trinkwasser gelangen. Kläranlagen sind nur teilweise in der Lage, die Fülle an synthetischen Verbindungen aus dem Abwasser zu entfernen. Unter anderem gelangen so Arzneimittelrückstände, Röntgenkontrastmittel, Hormone und hormonell wirksame Substanzen (Endokrine Disruptoren) in das Trinkwasser. Die Konzentrationen der einzelnen Spurenstoffe im Trinkwasser sind aufgrund des hohen Verdünnungsfaktors meist um Größenordnungen zu gering, um für den Menschen ein Gesundheitsrisiko darzustellen. Dies gilt jedoch nicht für alle Stoffe gleichermaßen. Endokrin wirksame Substanzen zeigen schon bei sehr geringen Konzentrationen einen Einfluss auf das Hormonsystem von Lebewesen. Hormone sind an vielen Prozessen im Körper maßgeblich beteiligt. Dazu gehört die Organentwicklung, die Fortpflanzung und die Stimmung. Endokrine Disruptoren sind in ihrer Struktur den Hormonen sehr ähnlich, wodurch sie in ähnlicher Weise wie die Hormone wirken und Reaktionen im Organismus auslösen können. Endokrin wirkende Chemikalien stören somit die hormonelle Kommunikation zwischen den Zellen und können tiefgreifende Auswirkungen auf unsere Gesundheit haben. Endokrine Disruptoren werden mit Fortpflanzungsstörungen, Immunstörungen, Fettleibigkeit, Krebs und anderen Krankheiten in Verbindung gebracht. Ein prominentes Beispiel für die teilweise dramatischen Auswirkungen, die hormonähnliche Substanzen auf die Umwelt haben können, ist die vermehrte Ausbildung von weiblichen Individuen bei Fischen, die flussabwärts von kommunalen oder industriellen Kläranlagenabwässern beobachtet werden.
Mit der Weiterentwicklung der Bestimmungsgrenzen von Analysemethoden ist es heute möglich, auch kleinste Mengen von Spurenstoffen im Trinkwasser nachzuweisen. Endokrin wirksame Chemikalien finden sich in vielen alltäglichen Verbraucherprodukten. Zu den bekanntesten endokrinen Disruptoren gehören polychlorierte Biphenyle (PCBs), Weichmacher wie Phthalate und Bisphenol A (BPA), Dioxine, PFC, PFOS, PBDE und das Insektizid DDT. Viele dieser ED sind chemisch persistent und reichern sich in der Umwelt und in Organismen an. Aufgrund ihrer gefährlichen Eigenschaften dürfen endokrine Disruptoren nur in Ausnahmefällen zugelassen und vermarktet werden. Für ED sieht die Chemikalienverordnung der Europäischen Union, REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) eine gefahrenbasierte Regulierung vor.
Die Bewertung der Gefahren, die von ED ausgehen ist jedoch schwierig zu Bewerten. Dies liegt vor allem daran, dass das Wissen über die Funktion des Hormonsystems und dessen Sensitivitätsunterschiede noch begrenzt ist. Darüber hinaus besteht die Möglichkeit, dass Effekte zeitlich verzögert auftreten und vor allem in sensiblen Lebensphasen auftreten und erst in nachfolgenden Generationen sichtbar werden. Weiterhin haben die ED (die überhaupt bekannt sind) sehr geringe Wirkkonzentrationen, welche sich möglichweise durch additive Effekte mit einer Vielzahl von bereits in der Umwelt vorhandenen endokrin wirksamen Chemikalien verstärken.
Zum Schutz vor möglichen gesundheitsschädlichen Auswirkungen der ED-Aufnahme ist weitere Grundlagenforschung erforderlich. Darüber hinaus müssen Prüf- und Grenzwerte für Trinkwasser ständig an die neuesten Erkenntnisse angepasst werden. Die novellierte EU-Trinkwasserrichtlinie, die am 12. Januar 2021 in Kraft trat, sieht weitere angepasste Grenzwerte und neue Anforderungen für Stoffe mit endokriner Wirkung vor. Zusätzlich sind weitere Ansätze zu verfolgen, um den Eintrag von ED in das Trinkwasser zu reduzieren. Stoffe mit endokrinen Wirkungen sind zum einen zu identifizieren und wenn möglich von der Verwendung auszuschließen. Darüber hinaus sind weitere Behandlungsstufen in Kläranlagen denkbar, die die konventionelle Abwasserreinigung ergänzen. Durch die Erforschung und das Monitoring der Trinkwasserqualität kann das Trinkwasser als Schutzgut somit langfristig erhalten bleiben.
