In Germany and Europe, the monitoring of nitrate concentrations in groundwater and surface waters plays a crucial role in assessing the impact of agricultural activities and developing suitable water protection measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysing and reducing nitrogen emissions is also becoming increasingly important in the field of environmental technology. Here, companies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/burmeier-ingenieure.de\/en\/\">BIG <\/a>&nbsp;- Part of <a href=\"https:\/\/siera.com\/de\/\">SIERA Alliance<\/a> make an important contribution to the assessment of environmental impacts and the development of sustainable solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The nitrogen monitoring system<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection<\/strong> and the <strong>Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture<\/strong> publish a nitrate report every four years. The current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umweltbundesamt.de\/system\/files\/medien\/2875\/dokumente\/nitratbericht_2024_bf.pdf\"><strong>Nitrate report 2024<\/strong><\/a> assesses nitrate pollution in groundwater on the basis of measurements from <strong>679 monitoring sites of the EU nitrate monitoring network<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the groundwater <strong>Surface waters<\/strong> with regard to their exposure to nutrients. This is based on data from <strong>316 measuring points of the LAWA monitoring network (L\u00e4nderarbeitsgemeinschaft Wasser)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of this monitoring is to evaluate the effectiveness of measures to reduce nitrogen inputs into water bodies. This includes, among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the cultivation of catch crops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the reduction of mineral fertilisers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the expansion of organic farming<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The evaluation is carried out within the framework of the <strong>EU Nitrates Directive (Directive 91\/676\/EEC)<\/strong>, which aims to protect water bodies from nitrate pollution from agricultural sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Political measures and regulatory developments<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Germany has been facing challenges for years in complying with the limit values for nitrate in groundwater. Due to persistent exceedances, the <strong>European Commission initiated infringement proceedings against Germany in 2017.<\/strong> in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to this, the <strong>Fertiliser ordinance revised<\/strong>, which in the <strong>May 2020<\/strong> came into force. Due to the burden on agricultural businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, its implementation was initially postponed until <strong>January 2021<\/strong> suspended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The revised regulation aims to achieve this,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>control the use of fertilisers more precisely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce the amount of mineral fertilisers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>improve the protection of groundwater.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Current nitrate pollution in groundwater<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the nitrate concentrations in German groundwater show a <strong>slight improvement<\/strong>, however, continue to lie in many regions <strong>above the target limit values<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>Reporting period 2020-2022<\/strong> the threshold value of <strong>50 mg\/l nitrate<\/strong> in <strong>25.6 % of the measuring points<\/strong> exceeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By comparison, this share in the previous period was <strong>2016-2019 at 26.6 %<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most exceedances occur in <strong>regions characterised by agriculture<\/strong> on. In areas with predominantly <strong>Residential development or forest areas<\/strong> elevated nitrate concentrations are detected much less frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the positive side <strong>51.2 % of the measuring points<\/strong> meanwhile as <strong>slightly contaminated or uncontaminated<\/strong> apply. The average nitrate levels there are <strong>below 25 mg\/l<\/strong>. In the previous reporting period, this share was <strong>49,6 %<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition <strong>Decreasing nitrate concentrations at 34.4 % of the measuring points<\/strong> a significant increase compared to the previous year <strong>23.0 % in the previous period<\/strong>. The nitrate values were analysed as <strong>annual averages<\/strong> and then calculated for the period <strong>2020-2022 summarised<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results show:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>No measuring point exceeded the limit value of 50 mg\/l nitrate<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>77.2 % of the measuring points were below 25 mg\/l<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, the <strong>Distribution of nitrate concentrations in surface waters largely stable compared to previous reporting periods<\/strong>. This indicates that although the situation has not deteriorated any further, no comprehensive improvements are yet recognisable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges in the evaluation of long-term trends<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the slight improvement in nitrate levels in the groundwater <strong>No clear long-term trends at present<\/strong> derive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is mainly due to two factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Restructuring of the groundwater monitoring network<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the long periods of nitrogen cycles in the soil and groundwater<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Nitrogen compounds can be stored in the soil for many years and are often delayed in reaching the groundwater. Therefore <strong>Effects of political measures often only measurable after a long time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to evaluate long-term developments, more and more <strong>Modelling approaches<\/strong> used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Modelling of nitrogen flows<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Pure measurement data is often not sufficient to fully understand the complex processes of nitrogen transport. Therefore <strong>hydrological models<\/strong> for use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These take into account, among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nitrogen and phosphorus inputs from agriculture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transport processes in the soil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residence times in groundwater<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flow dynamics of groundwater bodies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With the help of such models <strong>Estimating nitrogen losses from the topsoil<\/strong>, <strong>Analysing groundwater flows<\/strong> and the <strong>Evaluate the effectiveness of measures to reduce exposure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In future, environmental analyses are likely to be supplemented by the following developments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extended measuring networks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved modelling procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more precise estimates of the fertiliser requirements of different farm types.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Contribution of environmental engineering<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protection of groundwater resources is a long-term challenge that requires both scientific analyses and practical engineering solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the \u201eEngineering for a Better Tomorrow\u201c initiative, companies in the SIERA Alliance are committed to the protection of natural resources and the sustainable use of environmental resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nitrate is just one of many environmentally relevant substances that can pollute water bodies.
